The Holy Prophet performed Hajj on 10th Hijri. In the last days of the month of Safar, on his return from Baqi al-Ghurqad, his health became unwell. During the days of his illness, the Holy Prophet kept visiting the houses of his wives. With the consent of all the wives, the Holy Prophet (s) shifted in the house of Hazrat Ayesha permanently. (Sahih al-Bukhari)
Four days before the demise of the Holy Prophet (s) , he lead the not come to the mosque to lead the prayer. He (s) ordered that Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique (R.A) Maghrib prayer but the illness got severe at the time of Isha, the Holy Prophet could not come to mosque to lead the prayer.He (s) ordered that Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique (R.A) should be asked to lead prayers. So, Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique ( رضي الله تعالى عنه ) Siddique performed the duties of Imamat. After that, one or two days before His demise, the Holy Prophet and Hazrat Ali came out of his house. He (s) was supported by Hazrat Abbas and Hazrat Ali. He led the prayer and after the prayer gave some advice to the Companions .
The Holy Prophet (s) freed all the slaves one day before his demise. He had a few dinars with him, he gave them in charity and said,
"My inheritance will not be in the form of dinars." Whatever I have after the expenses of my wives and the wages of my servants, all that is left is charity. (Sahih al-Bukhari: 6729)
The Holy Prophet (s) gave war equipment etc. to the Muslims as gift. After the death, the Caliphs continued to use these things and were transferred from one to another.
At the time of morning prayer on the day of demise, the Holy Prophet suddenly lifted the veil of Hazrat Ayesha Siddiqa's house and smiled to see his Companions offering the prayers. Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique (R.A) was leading the Imamate. He started moving back during the prayer to give place to the Holy Prophet (s) but he signalled to continue the prayer and dropped the veil from the blessed hand. (Sahih al-Bukhari: 4448)
After offering the Fajr prayer, the Holy Prophet (s) called his beloved daughter Hazrat Fatima (R.A) and then he said something twice in her ears. First she started to cry later she started smiling. Later when she was asked about it, she said: First the Holy Prophet (s) told me that I'm going to depart this life because of this illness, so I started to cry. Then the messenger(s) of Allah said: "Don't cry. You will be the one who will meet me first among Ahl al-Bayt." At this, I started smiling. (Sahih al-Bukhari: 4434)
Hazrat Fatima said with grief:
"Oh, my father's sufferings."
At this, the Holy Prophet (s) said:
''After today, there will be no sufferings to your father. ''
There was a stone or wooden bowl full of water near the Holy Prophet (s) . He (s) used to dip his hand in water and wet his face with it and said: ''There is no God but Allah.Indeed demise has many hardships. ''
Hazrat Usama bin Zaid came to meet the Holy Prophet (s) and the silently said prayer for him. During these days of his illness, the Prophet addressed his Companions several times and gave them various instructions. He made a bequest for good behavior with the Ansar and said that they belong to his heart. They fulfilled their responsibilities and their rights remained.
Before his demise, the Holy Prophet said:
'' Allah has shown one of His servants the world and its splendors, but he has preferred the Hereafter for himself. ''
Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique understood that the Holy Prophet is talking about himself and started crying after hearing that. People looked at him in astonishment, because people could not understand the depth of this sentence. Just like this, a few moments before the demise of the Prophet , the Messenger of Allah called Syed Imam Hasan and Syed Imam Hussain and kissed them and bequeathed them good behavior. Asked the people to take care of their prayers and bequeathed good behavior to the people. When the last moments of the Holy Prophet started, at that time, his head was in the lap of Hazrat Ayesha Siddiqa. Her brother, Hazrat Abdur-Rahman bin Abi Bakr appeared with a miswak in his hand.
Hazrat Ayesha softened the miswak and gave it to the Holy Prophet brushed his teeth and looked at the ceiling and raised his finger: Those were the last words of the Holy Prophet.
اللَّهُمَّ بِالرَّفِيقِ الْأَعْلَى“
Translation:
"O Allah, unite me with a high-ranking Rafiq (Friend)."
He repeated these words thrice and then his hand fell down. It was morning time when the Holy Prophet (s) departed from this world.
When the time of his ghusal and burial came, according to his will, water was brought from seven wells of Madinah Munawarah for ablution, and the water was heated by adding berry leaves. Hazrat Kassam bin Abbas , Hazrat Fazl bin Abbas , Hazrat Abbas ,Hazrat Ali , Hazrat Osama bin Zayd and the Holy Prophet's salve Hazrat Shakran ghusal. The funeral prayer was not offered in a group form rather people came in groups and recited Durood and Salam on the Messenger of Allah.
When the Ahl al-Bayt Athar and the Companions .Hazrat Abu Talha ,prepared a grave for the Holy Prophet (s) . Hazrat Abbas , Hazrat Ali and Hazrat Kassam Bin Abbas, Hazrat Fazal Bin Abbas got the honour to put the blessed body of the Holy Prophet (s) in grave. After the burial, Hazrat Bilal sprinkled water towards the head side of the blessed grave.
The chamber of Hazrat Ayesha had the honor of becoming the burial chamber of the Holy Prophet. For the people of Madina, there was no happier day than the arrival of the Holy Prophet (s) in Madina, and for the Companions of the Holy Prophet (s) there was no news more painful than the demise of the Prophet. The chain of revelation of Hazrat Jibrael was cut off forever with the demise of the Holy Prophet.
